Rethea flew as a senior cabin attendant for South African Airways during which she was involved in safety procedures and quality. She furthered her aviation career as technical secretary in auditing and safety. She is a competent qualified Safety Officer and Quality Auditor.

Her experience includes the compilation of Flight Operations Manuals, Safety Management Courses, Quality Assurance, and Emergency Response Planning and Blake Emergency Services Deployment Administrator. She is also an accomplished organist.
